Avon Dam
The Avon Dam is located about 1.5 miles from the car park at Shipley
Bridge. The car park is set within a disused naptha factory that
operated from 1846 to 1850. Naptha was distilled from peat and used in
mothballs and candles. It is a pleasant walk along a surfaced path by
the river Avon
with dramatic views across the moor as you reach the dam. There are
remains of a bronze age settlement - Ryder's Rocks - on
the east bank of the river just below the dam. The 50 acre
reservoir in open moorland was completed in 1957 at a cost of
£1,000,000 to supply water to the South Hams. It offers a taste
of wilderness fishing for wild brown trout is a dramatic Dartmoor
setting.
Early in the season it can be cold this high on Dartmoor and local
anglers tend to wait for a spell of sunshine before tackling Dartmoor's
wild brown trout.

hooks to be used)
